No trip to San Diego is complete without a stop to the San Diego Zoo, one of the largest and most diverse zoos in the world. The San Diego Zoo sits on 100 acres of parkland in Balboa Park in the heart of downtown San Diego and houses over 3,700 animals.
For anyone interested in seeing all the beauty, danger, and diversity of the creatures on our planet, the San Diego Zoo is the place to go. The park is broken up into a wide variety of exhibits, including:
- Panda Trek
- Polar Bear Plunge
- Elephant Odyssey
- Absolutely Apes
- Tiger River
- Owens Aviary
- Monkey Trails
- Gorilla Tropics
- Scripps Aviary
Whether your favorite animals are elephants, polar bears, lions, giraffes, penguins, hippos or something else, you’re bound to see them up close and personal at the San Diego Zoo.
For those who love Pandas, the San Diego Zoo is one of only four zoos in the United States that have giant pandas on display. When you visit the park, make your way down to Panda Trek and meet the four pandas that live at the San Diego Zoo, including Xiao Liwu, the youngest panda who was born on July 29, 2012.
The zoo also provides many different extras that you and your family can enjoy, including shows like “Camp Critters Sea Lion Show” and “Dr. Zoolittle Explores Australia”. The zoo also provides plenty of restaurants and food stands where visitors can enjoy lunch, dinner, and fun snacks. Shops along the way are filled with postcards, stuffed animals, books and other souvenirs.
The San Diego Zoo is especially pleasant to visit in the fall and winter seasons. The park is much less crowded during these times, which means less noise and distraction, shorter lines, and great views of all of the animals. The weather during the fall and winter months can range from warm to crisp, but it rarely ever gets cold or unpleasant. The cooler weather is also more enjoyable for many of the animals, so you might get to see more a more active display than during the hot summer months.
The San Diego Zoo is within a short drive of many of the rentals on offer at San Diego Coast Rentals. Adults and children will enjoy spending the day wandering through this amazing zoo and seeing the creatures of the world.
